To maximise the reach and impact of our wellbeing program, we partnered with two exceptional individuals to jointly deliver engaging Confidence Masterclasses:

Carl Baker (Ex-Professional Footballer): Carl delivered sessions to approximately 690 learners from Years 7, 8, and 9, sharing his journey and demonstrating practical wellbeing tools. He also led smaller, focused football coaching sessions for 40 learners.

Both Carl and Amy received comprehensive training from Happy Confident Kids to be able to effectively integrate alongside us in the Masterclass. The masterclasses covered key concepts such as:

  • Mindful Breathing
  • Understanding Confidence
  • Body Awareness
  • Setting Goals and Visualizing Success
  • Positive Self-Talk (Inner Coach)
  • The Power of Smiling
  • Hydration
  • Recognising and Appreciating “Glimmers” (Tiny Moments of Joy)

These sessions aimed to equip learners with practical strategies for managing emotions, building confidence, and fostering a positive mindset. By sharing their personal experiences, Carl demonstrated that these tools are accessible and achievable. Carl’s local success was especially relatable for many learners.

During the masterclass, learners were asked to raise their hands if they had drunk any water that day. In the Year 9 session, approximately 5% raised their hands, indicating that they hadn’t had anything to drink since the previous day due to sleep. This suggests that 95% of the learners in the room were potentially dehydrated, which can negatively impact concentration and focus.

The masterclasses generated significant excitement and engagement throughout the school, providing learners with the unique opportunity to connect with successful athletes who champion wellbeing. icant confidence boost.

One learner, who had previously participated in “In the Wild” and 1-2-1 sessions, demonstrated a remarkable transformation. Previously prone to anger and aggression, she focused her energy positively on the game, showcasing significant self-expression and improved behaviour, enabled by the interventions.

The “glimmer” feedback from learners revealed a wide spectrum of positive experiences and sources of joy.

Positive Feedback Highlights:

  • “Meeting Carl Baker and hearing his story… it made me feel Joyful.”
  • “Listening to Carl talk about being positive and never letting anyone stop you. It makes me feel positive to myself.”
  • “Carls story of what confidence is… it made me feel Happy.”
  • “Meeting a football legend. It made me feel Happy.”
  • “Hearing carl and his inspiring speech… it made me feel Brilliant.”

The positive feedback received from both learners and staff underscores the value and effectiveness of this initiative.
